Following the terrible damage to the Caribbean by hurricane Irma, being no strangers to the threats from hurricanes, the Cuban government sprang quickly into action, evacuating the worst hit areas and ensuring the Cuban people were safe. Visiting tourists received fast action to protect them and now that Irma has passed, the authorities on the island have been working night and day, to restore thee infrastructures that were damaged, and reopen the hotels and restaurants. it is a fact that tourism has been severely affected, due to cancellations and uncertainty. After all, who would want to go to a zone that suffered disaster. But media reports seem to have exaggerated some of the damage, frightening potential travelers away from Cuba.
Of course it does take a while for things to get back to normal. But with its resilience and determined approach, the Cuban authorities and most importantly the people of Cuba, have ensured that the main tourist destinations are once again open for business. In a country that suffered a heavy recession due to the USA trade embargo and the collapse of the Soviet Union aid packages, it is amazing to see what so much has been done with so little. The struggles of the Cuban people have not dampened their welcoming nature and their warm regards for foreign visitors. Indeed, the government owned tourism department and its chains of hotels have accelerated their building programmes, opening even better quality accommodation for even the most discerning visitor. Anyone who has ever visited Cuba, and Havana in particular, have nothing but praise for the sunny climate, the friendly people, the swaying rhythms and the fine Cuban attitude. Many new bars and restaurants are springing up and there is a definite drive towards quality and professionalism, amongst the many thousands of workers within the tourism sector.
